NC State LIVE Presents Lakota John at the Gregg Museum

A live blues concert featuring Lakota John and his family, celebrating indigenous musical culture.

This year, NC State LIVE and the Gregg Museum of Art & Design are joining forces to present concerts focused on community connection and well-being. John “Lakota John” Locklear is a living representation of the musical cultures of southeastern North Carolina. He is a member of the Lumbee Tribe that combines the blues with the indigenous music of his ancestors. Locklear first picked up the harmonica at age 7, then the guitar. At age 10, intrigued by the sound of the slide guitar, he bought a glass slide, placed it on his pinky finger and has been sliding ever since. Mama Tonya, Papa John and Sister Layla join him to form a proud Lumbee Nation family of talented musicians. In connection with this event, please visit these Gregg Museum exhibitions: Stories Told by Breath: Native American Voices in North Carolina and A Creek in Carolina: Artworks by Bobby C. Martin. They will be on display through Sept. 26. This event is free, but registration is required.
